“Transforming our world” is the name of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development proposed by the United Nations. This Agenda is designed to strengthen global peace, freedom and sustainability. The signing of Agenda 30 has marked a significant turning point in the history of mankind, where the focus has shifted to sustainable development. Within the Agenda, education plays an integral part in fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals that comes along with Agenda 30. Goal 4.7 has emphasized incorporating knowledge and skills required for sustainable development in all curriculums for learners.
Since then, many countries have used many ways to enhance the implementation of education for sustainable development in different educational levels. Among those, Japan and Vietnam, the two countries which have a history of comprehensive cooperation, have shown their efforts in bringing sustainable development into higher education, particularly university level. However, the quality of the appearance of sustainability in the curricula and the learning outcome of both countries’ universities have not been researched comprehensively. In order to understand how focused are the curricula of universities on sustainable development based on the subjects provided and the potential for cooperation between the two countries’ universities, this paper is going to examine the case of University of Economics and Finance and Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University.
This paper will focus on dissecting the curricula of University of Economics and Finance (UEF) and Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in terms of learning outcomes and subjects’ objectives. The paper will answer the following questions:
(1) What are the differences in learning outcomes between the international relations major in UEF and APU in relation to sustainable development?
(2) How focused are the curricula of the two universities on sustainable development based on the subjects provided?
